Wake up and smell the coffee

Have you noticed how scents have an amazing ability to evoke memories and affect our mood?

As a candlemaker, I’m surrounded by incredible fragrances in my studio. I often tap into the power of scent. If I’m missing the sun in the depths of winter, I’ll make a few Paradise Beach melts to lift my spirits. I love watching a roaring fire – the dancing flames can mesmerise me for hours. But when I can’t justify lighting the log burner on a dull July day, Fireside conjures up that warm, cosy feeling.

The downside of continually being surrounded by a heady mix of scents is that it can sometimes lead to becoming a little ‘nose blind’. The intensity of the strongest-smelling fragrance oils (gingerbread, I’m looking at you) seems to lessen as the day progresses. I then begin to wonder if my lovingly crafted candles have any scent at all.

A top tip among chandlers afflicted by nose blindness is to sniff a few coffee beans. Their strong aroma swiftly resets the sense of smell and it’s back to that fabulous smell of home-made gingerbread.

Alas, that solution’s not for me. I’m one of those strange individuals who detest coffee (and tea, for that matter). Mr Fenwick Candles, however, is a coffee fiend whose idea of heaven is a No.5 Javan roast – dark, rich and sultry. Sadly, Mr FC is none of these… And now that he’s treated himself to an Aeropress, he’s been like Tigger on steroids.

Coriander (cilantro) is another no-no for me. Ever been told to ‘wash your mouth out’ for uttering an expletive? Chewing coriander would have the desired effect on me as it tastes like a bar of Imperial Leather. This time I can blame my parents. Being in a global minority for whom coriander tastes like soap is, apparently, all down to my genes.

A little coriander with your soap, Madam?

It’s these delightful little quirks of nature, though, that make us who we are. Like taste, our sense of smell is unique to each and every one of us and, as a candlemaker, I celebrate that uniqueness and individuality; otherwise, the world would be a duller place.

But don’t expect to see a Fenwick Candles Coffee & Coriander candle any time soon…
